One of
the obstacles that we will frequently find when implementing changes in an
organization is the sensation that the proposed program will imply heavier
workload, in addition to what each person already has in the organization.
Our
mission in TPM is to help everyone in the whole organization do all they have to
do easier, safer and with more efficiency. It is important that we promote this
mission so that people of the diverse departments are informed that TPM, far
from being a load for them, will be a great ally to speed up their tasks.
As we
advance with successful projects, we should strongly promote the benefits
obtained by those who have participated and to what degree TPM decreased the
workload, the risk of accidents or the breakdown lost times. It is easy to get
those results, and it is worth it that everyone in the organization know about
them, so that when to we invite other people, they will be willing to
participate.
One of
the big administrative advantages of the TPM is that it implies a documentation
process. This is particularly positive for the companies in process of ISO-900X
certifications. As we know, these standards require a clear written
specification of the processes, as well as following them thoroughly and on
time. "To say what is done, and to do what is said", understanding
that this "to say" is always in writing.
It is
clear then that the "kick off" of TPM implementation will not only be
based on the success that we achieve in the pilot project, but in making sure
that everyone finds out. We have to… "toot our own horn!”
Modeling
a New Culture
This
kind of promotion will contribute short term for the different managers or
supervisors of other areas reach us to speed up the implementations on their
equipment and systems. Some cases of spontaneous imitation will start popping
up. A lot of people discover how they can benefit from improving their
workspace.
I
remember of a case like this at the carpentry shop in NASSCO. After seeing the
success of the TPM in a near shop inside the same plant, supervisors and
operators made the decision of transforming their area. The area was all very
clean, with colored, well-lubricated machines, ducts and covers in their place,
tools on boards with silhouettes and visual systems that certainly made a great
difference. People took great pride and logically the morale of the whole
personnel increased and with it, their productivity. I should clarify that it
was a unionized atmosphere.
If the
company has an internal publication or billboards, they can be a very effective
means for broadcasting the achievements of TPM. Let us remember that there are
several reasons for this promotion:
1. Let everyone
know that a great effort is being made to improve the effectiveness and
productivity of the company.
2. It is
important for all to know that the TPM program has the support of top
management.
3. The
implementation of TPM benefits us, making our work easier, safer and more
efficient.
