Dear
Readers and Colleagues,
We publish
listings of the TPM Awards only as an informative service to our community.
In no way we want you to perceive that we endorse this or any other kind of
"award". Certainly they really make an organization "Look
Good" no doubt. The organizations who promote awards though, are costly
entities that even if very serious and professional like the Japanese
Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), require from the candidates to the
prize a series of fees that are not reimbursable even if the registrant does
not succeed in the achievement of the recognition.
Awards are
designed to build and enhance Egos. Managers, Implementers, and Consultants
may pursue them because they definitely will look like a brilliant feather
in their caps. Some employers may even give those lines in a résumé a lot
of importance. But the award will Never convey any operational benefits
whatsoever, just as neither will a trophy from your High School athletic
achievements or a diploma of any kind.
This is
pretty obvious, and in some cases small companies have invested a
small fortune trying to get the awards with no results. The real benefit of
implementing a good TPM or Lean culture comes from the implementation
itself. Many companies every year succeed at implementing these disciplines
to the "tailor fit" extent they really need them, and the payback
is the best reward one can achieve.
It is
important to analyze what you really need to improve your productivity. Not
all the Lean Manufacturing tools are applicable everywhere. Some experienced
advice can help you avoid embarking into an implementation with shallow
benefits for your operation.
My
recommendation is that you seriously embark into the implementation of TPM
as it is one of the strongest strategies of the Toyota Production System if
you are experiencing some of the following:
Your
plant's reliability and uptime are below 90%
You feel
that there is not enough Team-Work in your crews
Operators
seem not to care about the productivity and good function of their equipment
Maintenance
department seem to be constantly overloaded and in "rush" mode
Some
machines are costing you more to maintain than if you had bought a new one
Machines
and plant show deterioration and decay
People
never find what they need
Setups are
taking too long
Feel free
to send me an
email. I will answer at no cost and without any conditions. If you are
in the US, I may be able to help you get Federal and/or State support.
